Transport Network
By Air
Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick & Aberdeen airports offer scheduled
flights to most European destinations, avoiding congested hub airports.
All have fast, modern customs & baggage facilities. Glasgow alone
handles more than 6.7 million passengers per year. Midweek there are
almost 100 flights per day from Scottish airports to London.
Glasgow offers direct transatlantic flights
to North America, including New York, Chicago & Toronto.
The Alba Centre is conveniently located
near the M8 motorway, which runs between the two airports.
By Rail
Scotland's outstanding rail infrastructure provides fast and reliable
passenger and freight services to other United Kingdom & European
centres.
The national Eurocentral Rail Freight Terminal,
located between Glasgow & Edinburgh, provides a strategic rail link
to Europe through the Channel Tunnel. Currently, three trains operate
in each direction each day, and the terminal is designed to handle around
400,000 tonnes of freight each year.
The Alba Centre is served by regular train
services from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
By Road
Scotland offers a modern and comprehensive road network, with considerably
lower traffic densities than most areas in the United Kingdom. Many
of the international companies based in Scotland consider this to be
one of its key attractions.
Scotland has a compact and sophisticated
road network that supports Just-in-Time delivery. Scotland enjoys an
excellent selection of transport providers, both large international
organisations and smaller high quality local companies.
Telecommunications
Within Scotland, the telecommunications infrastructure is among the
most advanced in Europe. All local exchanges are fully digital which
means that any new company locating in Scotland will have access to
a range of services delivered over ISDN and ATM platforms, such as Inbound
Telemarketing Calls. Scotland offers business critical access to high
bandwidth fibre optic routes.
The Internet Protocol infrastructure within
Scotland has recently expanded dramatically, with the completion of
the BT "Colossus" network. This new infrastructure includes
the launch of Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) based services,
which will pave the way for broadband applications such as video on
demand and high speed Internet access.
Added to the infrastructure and high bandwidth
fixed line Internet access is the imminent launch of a new Mobile Data
service operating on GPRS based technology. Scotland will be one of
the first countries in Europe to benefit from this latest technology,
providing a platform for a major increase in Internet penetration, resulting
in the stimulation required for huge growth in e-Commerce.
