Scotland – Excelling in Education

Scotland is known the world over for the high standards of its education system, which emphasises vocational training, science and technology. For centuries, a Scottish education has been among the best preparations for life and work. Scotland, with 13 universities, nine specialist higher education institutions and 45 colleges of further education, produces the highest number of graduates per head of population in the European Union.

  • Scotland has a higher proportion of students in higher education as a percentage of all pupils and students than any other area in the UK.
  • Strathclyde University alone has one of the largest engineering faculties in the UK with around 3,000 students.
  • Scotland's universities are amongst the top 8 in the United Kingdom for research in computer science.

In 1998/99, Scottish Universities produced:

  • Nearly 11% of the UK engineering and Technology first class Honours degrees (the highest recognised undergraduate qualification in the UK)
  • Over 21% of the UK’s higher and postgraduate degrees in Computing Science

Institute for System Level Integration (ISLI)

Situated in The Alba Centre, Scotland has created the world’s first educational establishment for the teaching of System Level Integration at postgraduate level. The Institute capitalises on the strengths and collaboration of industry and four of Scotland’s top universities including Glasgow, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt.
