Scotland is known the world over for the high standards of its education system, which emphasises vocational training, science and technology. For centuries, a Scottish education has been among the best preparations for life and work. Scotland, with 13 universities, nine specialist higher education institutions and 45 colleges of further education, produces the highest number of graduates per head of population in the European Union.
