What is the Alba Centre?
The Alba Centre is the result of a unique collaboration involving government, industry and academia and is aimed at driving the future of electronic design. The project was officially launched in December 1997 by Scottish Enterprise, Scotland's economic development agency. Scottish Enterprise has been responsible for the thought leadership and all initial funding for the project.

Situated in Livingston, in the heart of Scotland's Silicon Glen, the Alba Centre has developed a unique infrastructure for electronic design, unrivalled anywhere else in the world. This infrastructure focuses on tackling the challenges of System Level Integration (SLI) and its implementation at component level which is System-on-Chip (SoC). Our aim is to support your design activities both today and in the years ahead with our long-term strategies for the semiconductor industry in Scotland.

What are the Alba Centre's initiatives?

Institute for System Level Integration
Providing the world's first Masters and Engineering Doctorate education in System Level Integration.
Virtual Component Exchange
An e-commerce organisation with global electronics industry backing, which has created the world's first Internet-based, regulated trading exchange for semiconductor intellectual property.
Microelectronics Test Centre
Developed by the Alba Centre in association with Test Advantage, the centre provides prototype characterisation services, test development facilities and test education.
Scottish Embedded Software Centre
Developed to provide a focal point for embedded software companies in Scotland, the centre offers technical and recruitment support, consultancy services and industry analysis.
Alba Campus
Alba is developing a 96 acre business park in the heart of Silicon Glen specifically focused on building and supporting a community of electronic design companies. All the Alba infrastructure cited above will be situated on the Campus.

As a location for electronic design, Scotland offers a unique environment supported by the Alba Centre infrastructure and the inward investment business advice offered by Locate in Scotland. We provide support to the full range of business challenges involved with setting up a new design team including the provision of fast-start incubator facilities, advice on tax, grants and staff recruitment.

It's no wonder then that leading electronics companies such as Motorola, Tality, Intel and Epson are all choosing to locate their design activities in Scotland.
