VIRTIO CORPORATION OPENS DEVELOPMENT SITE AT ALBA CENTRE
19 February 2001
Virtio, the creator of Internet virtual prototyping platforms, today (February 19) announced that it has opened a development site at the Alba Centre, Livingston, Scotland.
The operation, which will support Virtio’s
customers worldwide, will focus on platform development
with an initial team of five engineers that will
be expanded to more than 20 engineers during the
course of this year.
Virtual prototyping allows system designers to create
a high-performance software model of a complete
system - without the need for physical hardware.
The technology is powerful and scaleable enough
to model a complex embedded system and yet fast
enough to develop and execute production-quality
software very early in the design cycle.

Shay
Ben-Chorin, Virtio president and CEO said, "The
Alba Centre is a prime location for Virtio in
terms of talent, location and infrastructure.
In particular, the industry initiatives being
pioneered by the Alba Centre—such as the
Institute for System Level Integration—enable
us to leverage a pool of engineering talent
that is rich in embedded system expertise.

Donald Cramb, vice president of technical services
for Virtio noted, “Our ability to support
our customer’s platform development efforts
is directly related to the quality of technical
staff we have on board to service those customers.
Our ability to tap into engineering resources at
sites such as the Alba Centre enables us to select
from a broad spectrum of engineering talent that
will support our worldwide customer efforts.”
The project was won for Scotland by Locate in Scotland,
the joint Scottish Executive / Scottish Enterprise
inward investment agency working in partnership
with Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian and
the Alba Centre.
David Macdonald, Director of Locate in Scotland
said: "Virtio is the latest in a series of
companies which have recognised Scotland's ability
to offer an unrivalled combination of benefits to
those who are working at the cutting edge of embedded
technology. It is also yet another example of excellent
partnership between the LIS International team and
the specialist Alba team here in Scotland.”
David Crichton, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise
Edinburgh and Lothian, which has responsibility
for the Alba Centre said: “We are extremely
pleased that Virtio has chosen the Alba Centre as
the site that will support platform development
efforts for all of Virtio’s customers. Virtio’s
focus on embedded systems development fits well
with the profile of companies the Alba Centre is
working to attract.”

Notes to Editors
1. Based in Campbell, California, Virtio works to
evaluate, customise, and proliferate embedded systems
over the Internet. Its virtual prototyping technology,
enables Virtio to overcome critical time-to-market
barriers for both embedded system suppliers and
developers. Virtual prototyping allows system designers
to create a high-performance software model of a
complete system - without the need for physical
hardware. The technology is powerful and scaleable
enough to model a complex embedded system and yet
fast enough to develop and execute production-quality
software very early in the design cycle. Additional
information about Virtio is available at www.virtio.com.
2. System on Chip technology allows companies to
create new silicon products and bring them to market
more quickly. As soon as first silicon is ready,
it is essential that test capability be in place
to validate the design and deliver a characterised,
functional chip to the end customer as quickly as
possible.
3. The Alba Centre is the hub of a Scottish initiative
aimed at driving the future of electronic design.
It represents a unique collaboration involving government,
industry and academia to create a world-leading
centre for the electronic and related design industries
of the future. More information can be found at
www.albacentre.com.
4. In the year ended March 2000, Locate in Scotland
and the Scottish Executive helped to attract to
Scotland 91 inward investment projects involving
planned investment of £650 million and the expected
creation of, or safeguarding of more than 19,000
jobs.
5. Scottish Enterprise is the main economic development
agency for Scotland covering 93% of the population
from Grampian to the Borders. The Scottish Enterprise
Network consists of Scottish Enterprise and 13 Local
Enterprise Companies. Working in partnership with
the private and public sectors the Network aims
to build more and better businesses, to develop
the skills and knowledge of Scottish people, and
to encourage innovation to make Scottish business
internationally competitive. The Scottish Enterprise
Network Strategy has set four main goals for the
Scottish economy, including helping Scotland to
develop and foster innovative, farsighted organisations.
