AXEON ANCHORS DEVELOPMENT DEAL WITH SUB-SEA
IMAGE PROCESSING EXPERTS SON-IX TECHNOLOGIES
16 September 2002
Aberdeen neighbours join forces to apply innovative Neural
Network technology to complex sub-sea applications.
AXEON, a semiconductor intellectual property company developing
and marketing the VindAX® range of products, today announced that Son-IX
Technologies has licensed its VindAX Development System. Son-IX will
use the VindAX Development System to help in the development of its
Neural Network technology. AXEON's VindAX technology can be applied
to many complex applications including image recognition.
Son-IX will initially apply the VindAX processor in the field of sub-sea
inspection and classification, for example, in the identification of
sub-sea objects. The company's aim is to combine the power of the
VindAX processor with the ease of use of the Development System to tackle
many non-linear processing problems, that are difficult and time consuming
to solve with conventional Digital Signal Processing (DSP) solutions.
"AXEON's VindAX technology is already proving itself in the
automotive market where it can be used for several applications within
engine management systems. It is exciting to see it successfully applied
to marine and offshore applications where technology plays such an important
role. We are also proud to be working with Son-IX whose engineers are
actively working to deploy neural network technology within the sub-sea
industry, " said Hamish Grant, AXEON.
"Son-IX is founded on three cornerstone technologies - Digital
Signal Processing, Neural Networks and Databases. With the purchase
of the VindAX Development System, we have added the final element to
our existing DSP and Database capabilities," said, Colin McLean,
Technical Director, Son-IX Technologies.
By combining the three technologies, namely Digital Signal Processing,
Neural Networks and Databases, Son-IX Technologies extracts source data
or vectors from inspection equipment using conventional DSP and presents
them to the VindAX Technology for advanced processing. Data is then
managed using conventional databases.
Son-IX plans to make the Neural Networks more accessible to the subsea
technology arena by reducing the risks to OEM's native to this market.
Son-IX plans to introduce the novel neural network VindAX technology
to the sub-sea industry, previously not available or utilised. Son-IX
expects that by introducing VindAX, it will be able to improve existing
products on the market whilst also enhancing its own product range.
The VindAX technology will bring greater power and efficiency in the
sub-sea inspection and classification arena and together with the VindAX
development system, will deliver much shorter development cycles and
consequently time to market.
The VindAX® Development System enables users to investigate applications
of AXEON's VindAX® technology, which offers a novel approach to
problems involving non-linear systems. This technology can be applied
to a wide variety of areas such as Engine Management Systems in the
automotive sector, and handwriting and voice recognition. The VindAX®
approach, which is fundamentally different to traditional solutions,
greatly reduces the need for engineers with specific application domain
expertise, thus reducing development costs and accelerating time to
market. The VindAX® Development System allows developers to move from
a problem on paper to a solution in super quick time.

About AXEON
AXEON is a Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) Company that delivers
design building blocks to the semiconductor industry. AXEON's technology
enables the design of sophisticated microprocessor solutions to complex
and non-linear data problems through the use of its unique patented
Learning Algorithms. Microprocessor solutions that can handle complex
data problems are becoming a key requirement in areas such as engine
management, telematics and safety systems in automotive applications,
as well as in applications in the consumer electronics and industrial
markets. Through the use of AXEON's VindAX® Development System,
developers can rapidly design very complex microprocessor chips which
are ideally suited to the high performance, low power, low costs needs
of such applications. This vastly reduces development times for AXEON's
customers and therefore offers speedier time-to-market with significantly
reduced development costs.
AXEON was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland,
and has closed three rounds of private investment funding
